January 31st - Week In Review (#SOTU and other topics)

Week in Review:

Good day!  Believe it or not, 2014 is off and running as we finish the first month of the year with a mix of optimism and caution.  The State of the Union Speech dominated most of the headlines and the #SOTU hashtag search will bring a number of hits on twitter and other social media.  The Alliance for American Manufacturing offered their response to the SOTU speech, the AAM President's response can be viewed at the link below:

Health Care Fraud Cases Hits Hugh Last Year

"Federal prosecutors filed a record number of health care fraud cases last fiscal year, perhaps reflecting the greater emphasis the government has placed on combatting the crime costing taxpayers billions of dollars per year. "

"According to Justice Department statistics obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by a Syracuse University-based nonprofit group that tracks federal spending, staffing and enforcement activities, prosecutors pursued 377 new federal health care fraud cases in the fiscal year that ended in October. That was 3 percent more than the previous year and 7.7 percent more than five years ago."

White House Rebrands Obamacare

Manufacturing Insurance Blog-Setting the "Radar" for 2014!

Happy New Year!  Our team would like to take this opportunity to extend our best wishes for 2014!

This time of year often brings a renewed focus on planning, goal setting, resolutions, etc...as one of our manufacturing clients described it, it is a time "to get the radar turned back on from a brief holiday respite"...we agree.

So as we are all busy laying the groundwork for success in 2014, we thought it was appropriate to share the link below regarding the most recent update from The Alliance for American Manufacturing discussing their legislative "radar" for 2014.

AAM Legislative Radar for 2014

Our Practice Group Leader, Karl Sherrill, is involved with our state association's legislative committee that helps set the "radar" for legislative issues important to our business clients as it relates to regulation, taxes, insurance, health care, etc...  Each year in April, Karl participates in a conference in Washington DC meeting directly with representatives of Congress and the Senate to discuss the potential impact of pending/current legislation on businesses.

If you would like to discuss a specific legislative item or any manufacturing topic that is on your "radar," please let us know.

Have a great day and best wishes in 2014!

Note that this webinar will focus on issues of particular importance to employers who are considered “applicable large employers” (generally those with at least 50 full time equivalent employees). Small employers are not required to comply with the ACA employer shared responsibility rules.
