BCBSNC and Wilmington Health Launch Quality Program for Oncology

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) has announced the launch of the Blue Quality Physician Program for Oncology in Wilmington. The program will help ensure that all oncology patients throughout the state benefit from treatments that follow the latest evidence-based research in their community.

U. S. Department of Labor Updates Model COBRA Notice

Effective January 1, 2014, the Health Insurance Exchanges will provide another option to COBRA “qualified beneficiaries” who are considering whether to elect to continue health coverage under an employer’s group plan. The U.S. Department of Labor has revised its model COBRA election Notice to refer specifically to the availability of the Exchanges. The updated notice also includes other revisions related to health care reform, allowing participants to see what their premium, deductibles and out-of-pocket costs will be before they make a decision to enroll. Participants may also be eligible for a new kind of tax credit that lowers premiums.


Open enrollment for Health Insurance coverage through the Marketplace begins October 1, 2013. At this time, Senn Dunn Insurance is working to create a formal process of procedure to assist employers with the completion of the election form and to aid in the distribution of the appropriate materials at the time of open enrollment through the exchange. Once a formal process has been established, you will receive further communication in regards to the updated model COBRA notice from your dedicated employee benefits team.

Notice of Health Insurance Exchanges

Open enrollment for Health Insurance coverage through the Marketplace begins October 1st, 2013. Senn Dunn Insurance will provide your company with the model notice and instructions on how to notify your employees closer to the time of open enrollment through the exchange or during your Health Insurance Open Enrollment period. A few points of interest:

  • Notices must be sent 1st class mail
  • Notices are specific to your company and benefit plan
  • Open Enrollment for the exchanges begins October 1st, 2013 for coverage starting as early as January 1st, 2014

Senn Dunn Insurance to Open Charlotte Office in Fall of 2013

Senn Dunn Insurance is pleased to announce their expansion into the Charlotte metropolitan market by the opening of a new office in the energy and cultural downtown district.  The Ally Center, located at the corner of Church & First Streets, will serve as the Charlotte office for the fast-growing, Greensboro-based independent insurance agency by late summer 2013.

Aetna Completes Acquisition of Coventry Health Care, Inc.

Today Aetna announced the successful completion of their acquisition of Coventry Health Care, Inc. The acquisition will give Aetna the opportunity to provide quality products and services to a broader group of consumers throughout the United States and abroad. Aetna plans to grow the strong relationships that Coventry Health Care, Inc. maintained with local hospitals, physicians, and other provider groups to improve their network by incorporating a strong multi-site capabilities to locally infused business.

BCBSNC Offers Projections of Individual Rates Under the Affordable Care Act

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) has released new projections of what rates will look like for individual market customers under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Factoring in new federal subsidies and grandfathered plans, BCBSNC expects that about two-thirds of its individual market customers will see rate increases similar to those of recent years or decreases in 2014. BCBSNC predicts that the remaining one-third of individual market customers will see larger increases due to the ACA.

Now that the IRS has released it proposed regulations and additional detailed guidance, “applicable large employers” must make sure that they have designed their benefit offerings to minimize the risk of penalties under the §4980(H) employer shared responsibility rules. This webinar will be most valuable to employers with at least 50 full time equivalent (FTE) employees. The webinar will cover details regarding employer shared responsibility rules and the various methods to define full time employees.
